This fictional mystery/humor introduces Maggy Mae, an all-American girl Friday turned private eye, residing in all places, Brussels, Belgium, residing in all places Brussels, Belgium. A small land with plenty to offer, there’s more to Belgium than just waffles.
An American living abroad, Maggy finds herself “discreetly” aiding fellow expatriates in matters (both big and small) that the local gendarmerie authorities simply cannot be bothered with. “Discreet” being the operative word—she does not have a work permit to conduct business of any kind on foreign land, just a small glitch, perhaps one that could get her deported, but does not seem to discourage our heroine.
“Hush, hush, wink, wink,” the promise of charitable gifts, and under-the-table “donations” rouse Maggy to embark on yet another discreet investigation in this tongue-in-check narrative of who dun it and moreover who is doing it to whom. The fearless femme agrees to assist a self-proclaimed friend-of-a-friend in what presents itself to be a simple case of missing miniature knick-knacks. The minute investigation finds the sleuth bearing witness to a licentious ménage trois involving a cheating spouse, an elaborate cover up, and an unexpected twist Maggy never saw coming.
Muddling through the sordid mystery true to form, our sleuth relies on her ability to keep her eyes open and her big yap shut (usually because she is at a loss for words, often stammering a “huh?” and “er uh” where prolific words should be), her uncanny knack of good timing and keen instincts, which albeit are slightly skewed. With quick wit and an occasionally smarter mouth, she eventually puts together the big picture, exposing more than she ever fathomed.
Set in the suburbs of Brussels, Belgium, back-dropped with an odd combination of hometown suburbia and cosmopolitan living, where international glitz combats the doldrums of Americana, Amour or Less is consummated with a rather eclectic host of characters. Add a dash of—dare I say—sex, a heaping spoonful of scandal, and a juicy twist mixed up with a plethora of witty quips, and you have a scintillatingly salacious narration of mammoth proportions that will keep you guessing and giggling until the savory end.
